The Upcoming Trends of 2024

As we begin to transition from 2023 into the new year, many speculate as to what direction the internet will take us next.

This past year has been packed full of events and trends that took the internet by storm. From powerhouse women like Greta Gerwig, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé dominating the entertainment industry, to the silliest of memes like “girl dinner” and “sad beige mom”. It’s exciting to wonder what might be around the corner.

Recently, Instagram released their trend talk where they discuss what their predictions are. In this article, I will be breaking down which ones I think will be the top 5.

Fashion: Sustainability!

Gen Z as a generation has very much leaned towards sustainability and thrifting when it comes to their possessions. This isn’t just to create less waste, but to be more financially stable in the long run. Fashion is no exception. With an influx in fast fashion trends such as Shein and Temu, Gen Z is taking a step back from buying new and is focusing more on thrifting.

This thrifting also allows for a more creative angle when it comes to dressing yourself. Finding your “core” is much easier in diverse shopping forums such as thrift stores and marketplaces than it is on websites that are driven by trends.

So if you want to make a splash on social media when it comes to fashion, don’t be afraid to break out the camera and show off your thrifted style!

Relationship: Authenticity!

Statistics have shown that Gen Z is far more focused on building meaningful connections than followers on their social media. This means using their social media to stay more connected to friends and family. When asked how that connection would work on their Instagram, the most ways listed were: liking someone’s story, sending reels or memes in DMs, and liking a post on their feed.

So don’t feel the pressure to produce, polish, and publish. Focus on those connections and authentic relationships. It will make your feed more enjoyable, and more meaningful when you login.

Lifestyle: Growth and Development!

Self improvement has always been a highlight in the new year, but this year just feels a little different. Growing up watching other’s document their lives on the internet, Gen Z isn’t afraid to admit their flaws and be more genuine about their growth on social media. It’s easier to grow and learn when there’s honesty and integrity.

So if there’s an improvement journey you hope to go on this year. Whether it’s physical health, mental health, education, or general life goals, don’t be afraid to show it. Not only will it might encourage you to keep pressing forward, but you might be the spark that lights someone else’s fire for themselves.

The best form of self love is knowing your flaws and embracing the improvement process in a healthy and authentic way.

Makeup: Bold Meets Natural!

In the last few years we have really stepped away from the harsh contours and bold lips of 2016. Some, like myself, kind of miss that era as it was when we really learned to embrace creativity in makeup. While others are happy to kiss it goodbye.

So far, the trend has been little to no foundation, light bronzing with heavy blush, and light lashes whether it be just mascara or small false lashes. This look does wonders for some, but for others they may be wanting more. And though I am team “Do what you want it’s your face”, you may be relieved to know that some of the bold choices of 2016 are resurfacing to blend with the modern dewy glow.

This can look like light foundation, but a bold eye or lip color. Don’t be afraid to mix and match those trends to create a look suited for you. And remember, no matter what you choose to do always take care of that skin! Skin care today is definitively better compared to 2016!

Activism: Speak Up!

Gen Z has embraced activism online. And though sometimes it can go too far, the right intentions are there and it’s definitely not something to ignore or look over. You’d be surprised with how much support a simple educational post, sharing a post from a marginalized community, or simply encouraging peers to vote can do. It may not seem like much, but taking the time to educate yourself can positively impact others around you. Don’t be afraid to speak up and voice your opinions, and most importantly listen if you are being told a different perspective.

With all of these trends coming up, I have high hopes for this year. How about you?
